چکیده
This work aims to transform coffee silverskin (CSS), the only waste from roasting process, that worldwide amounts about 76 million kg/year, into value-added products within an integrated slow pyrolysis process. The study, performed at 280 °C, 400 °C and 500 determined potential applications of resulting fractions. Biochar has been studied as adsorbent organic pollutants in water, using methylene blue (MB) methyl orange (MO), which are respectively cationic anionic aromatic dyes, model compounds, with biochar giving highest removal values, 98% MB 40% MO. Moreover, CSS could be used obtain renewable energy its combustion, 22.6–24.2 MJ/kg calorific values. liquid fraction a source caffeine, among phenolics, aqueous phase presenting concentration caffeine (14.3 g/L). Concerning gas fraction, it heat for biomass drying before pyrolysis. Hence, use described would allow zero-waste achieved industry, thus promoting green circular economy production chemicals materials biorefinery context.

BACKGROUND In today's consumer perception of industrial processes and food production, aspects like food quality, human health, environmental safety, and energy security have become the keywords. Therefore, much effort has been extended toward adding value to biowastes of agri-food industries through biorefinery processing approaches. This study focused, for the first time, on the valorization ...

The MIT Faculty has made this article openly available. Please share how this access benefits you. Your story matters. Abstract Microorganisms have evolved different systems for storing carbon during times of stress. In the cell's natural environment, the stored carbon can then be utilized for growth when other nutrients are in better supply. Storage of carbon and other nutrients is ubiquitous ...
متن کاملHigh Antioxidant Activity of Coffee Silverskin
18 Coffee silverskin (CS) is a thin tegument of the outer layer of green coffee beans and a major 19 by-product of the roasting process to produce roasted coffee beans. CS extracts obtained by the 20 treatment of CS with subcritical water at 25–270 o C were investigated on their antioxidant 21 activity using hydrophilic oxygen radical absorption capacity (H-ORAC) and DPPH radical 22 scavenging ...
متن کاملA sustainable biorefinery to convert agricultural residues into value-added chemicals
BACKGROUND Animal wastes are of particular environmental concern due to greenhouse gases emissions, odor problem, and potential water contamination. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective and widely used technology to treat them for bioenergy production. However, the sustainability of AD is compromised by two by-products of the nutrient-rich liquid digestate and the fiber-rich solid digestate...
متن کاملPretreatment and Fractionation of Wheat Straw for Production of Fuel Ethanol and Value-added Co-products in a Biorefinery
An integrated process has been developed for a wheat straw biorefinery. In this process, wheat straw was pretreated by soaking in aqueous ammonia (SAA), which extensively removed lignin but preserved high percentages of the carbohydrate fractions for subsequent bioconversion. The pretreatment conditions included 15 wt% NH4OH, 1:10 solid:liquid ratio, 65 C and 15 hours. Under these conditions, 4...
